STRATEGIES for SUCCESS

In the next step of the ramp-up process the mentor will assign the Ultimate Read Program. The student will learn speed reading and memory tips from Mr. Howard Berg, “the World’s Fastest Reader,” according to the Guinness-
World Book of Records. Taught at this time are improved reading strategies which teach how the mind understands and reads text; increased comprehension, where students are instructed on how to find hidden information in surprising places and gain comprehension in all types of reading material; how to get higher grades, addresses how to know exactly what to study, with strategies for anticipating questions asked at school. Techniques to sharpen memory and how to handle stress are also introduced.
Once taught these incredible methods, the students are able to apply them to their first course, Literature. In addition, we ask our students to practice the 16 minute drill three times per week to allow them to steadily increase their reading speed.

The next course the student is assigned is math. We include two math options in our program, Omega Math www.omegamath.com and the Aleks program www.aleks.com . Feel free to visit these sites and check them out for yourself.  Of course, if you have an alternate math preference, you are welcome to use it; all we ask is that the mentor be faxed copies of all tests and that the student use our O.P.E.N method for math mastery.
Once the mentor determines that the student has ‘found their rhythm’ the student will be asked to watch the Study and
Test sections of the NEW Learning Edge. During this time the student will learn:
After the students have watched and completed the Study and Test section of the NEW Learning Edge, they will be
assigned their first World Book course. We use the World Book Encyclopedia instead of textbooks. Our curriculum is
designed to allow  students to use the accelerated methods they have been taught with the exceptional technology of the World Book Encyclopedia on DVDs. In a traditional school, the average student spends 42% of their time accessing
information; we use the World Book DVD allowing us to save the student’s valuable time. The World Book comes with
both auditory and picture enhancements to improve the student’s understanding of the material. Links are provided in each article to allow  students to easily research in more depth a subject of their choice. There is a built-in dictionary function which allows  students the opportunity to double click a word that is unfamiliar to them and read the definition instantly. This function improves our student’s vocabulary and word usage in a very ‘real learning’ environment. But most importantly, the World Book Encyclopedia is updated each year, so no outof-date textbooks for our students!
image-2After discussion with the student and site manager, the mentor will assign the last course to complete the student’s course load. We operate on a block system, just like the colleges do. Each student, when fully engaged, will be in a math course, Literature and two World Book courses. The final section of the NEW Learning Edge is taught at this time.

After the ramp-up is complete, the students will continue with their coursework as outlined on their Individual Academic Plan. They will submit their lessons each week on a day and time assigned to them by their mentor. Regular communication between the mentor and your faculty is important to us at the NEW American School and we welcome your feedback and questions. We are here to assist you in educating your students.
